I know a few older typographers. Lemme see what I can do...

Linotypes were common in the 60s, so TP could easily have encountered
one on a tour of a newspaper in HS or college. My guess is this obscure
fact is documented somewhere & was filed away until it could be used. 
Wonder if there's a character named "Lorem Ipsum" anywhere. These are
the
first 2 words in a latin text that is commonly used to "greek" a type
layout.
