Today's the anniversay of poor ol' Jack Kerouac's death. This is what my
silly desk calendar says about it:

"Jack Kerouac was the one who described the rebellious youths of the late
50s/early 60s as the 'Beat Generation.' His autobiographical novel, On the
Road, dealt with the then-forbidden fruits of casual sex and marijuana.
Jack Kerouac, hero, hep cat and spokesman for the Beat Generation died of a
gastric hemorrhage at 47."

How's that for the kind of error-riddled oversimplification that helped
drive Kerouac to despair during the last ten or so years of his life?

The mills of Lowell may be closed, but I know a corpse there that's still
spinning....

Looking forward to seeing Mr. Pynchon signing books at Borders (naturally),

davemarc
