I think he just means that there are a lot of parallels between the
major themes of Vineland and what Chrissie was saying (how the 70s and
80s turned out after the highs of the 60s). You should give Vineland a
try - it's a good treatment of the sixties (and the aftermath).  It
should also satisfy your requirements for clear and accessible writing
without an oversimplification of the issues.
