OK, my turn. I, too, feel a tad tawdry over this interview business, like
we're picking over someone's corpse but from a long way away and much
later and we're having to use someone else's hands to do it. Also, as an
academic (I guess I'll just admit that now), I am uncertain of the degree
to which the making the connection between human banalities (in this case
Pynchon's) and literary creations (his amazing oeuvre) can illuminate or
even correspond. And this from someone who has read People and the
Enquirer. Not that I attended the funeral of the death of the author
despite Roland Barthes' invitation, but I have definitely enjoyed TRP's
mysterious persona precisely because it permits the literature to speak
for itself. And by the way, re: that crack about academics interpreting
things best left alone and GR being as accessible as Dr. Suess, HOOEY.
Would you care to explain V. to me, Miss Maryann? I'm still trying to
figure out what the hell or who the hell that woman is and regressing to
everything I learned in kindergarten ain't going to help.
One last thing (I guess we can blame the pugilistic Mascaro--I'm not
usually this sarcastic--thanks John! I miss ya!), I am wondering how old
some of the people on this list are. Do you really still get a good buzz
when you smoke pot? Good Lord, I quit having unadulterated fun while high
at least seventeen years ago. It didn't stop me from doing it for a long
time but the lasting effect was paranoia, (now there's a connection to
Pynchon, I'll grant ya) not insight and groovitude.
Love and Fall Colors! Diana
