I'd say that The Simpsons are worth a space in American studies. The show
incorporates enough allusion to catalogue a good portion of pop culture. One
of my favorite episodes (which was rerun recently) had Ernest Borginine
leading a group of scouts (or some similar entity) down a river as the first
bars of "Duelling Banjoes" play in the background. Groening seems to have a
thing for Hemingway, too. 

Homer in 3D appeared first last year. My favorite line from that skit: "Doh.
I dunno anything about astrophysics. I wish I woulda read that book by the
wheelchair guy."
