Various folk sneer:

>South's gonna do it agin? What? Lose?
...
>> "The War of Yankee Aggression."
...
> Oh, immeasurably. And some of us still call it "The War to Give
> Southerners What They Damn Well Had Coming to Them."

<sigh> After over twenty years of living in the (US) South, I of course am well
past bored of mixing it up in exchanges of this brand. Still, for the sake of
balance I feel obliged to extend that in my experience this obsession with
alternate nomenclature for the American Civil War is much more likely to be
mentioned by someone who does not live in the South than by someone who does.
Such stereotyping is annoying enough to me that I've actually been keeping
record in recent time: the ratio is about 5 to 2 (about 30 separate incidents
over the past four years -- and yes, I _can_ say "anal retentive.")

I'd be getting too off-topic if I speculated on why this is the case (or why I
have so many times heard "those Southerners are really racist down there, aren't
they?" from someone reclining in an all-white or all-black bar or restaurant in
New York state, Washington state, California, etc.), so I'll just let the data
point dissolve in its own juices.

BTW: Don't mean to sound flamey/bitter...I know it's all in good fun!
