Approve.  Let him remain silent.  I heard some sound bites on the radio
today from Anne Rice, who's in Atlanta signing books.  Dreadful!  Unless
you're seriously into talking about yourself, which all clues suggest
Pynchon's not, I think you probably ought to avoid the
lecture/talk-show/book signing -- all those circuits.  By the end of the
first day he'd be rolling ball bearings in his hand and wondering who ate
the strawberries.  Within 48 hours -- tops -- he'd be shrieking death
threats at anybody moving toward him with a pen.  Any longer than that,
and "' . . . death may supervene; failing this, permanent hemiplegia --
or' -- the film lifted from the green eyes, and for a moment they
flickered with transient horror -- 'idiocy!'" (Fu Manchu)

That's just my opinion, of course.  Others may disagree.
