All this talk about von Braun reminds me of an anecdote told by the
father of a friend of mine. This man was a German Jew who was a
professor of mathematics in Germany until he came to the U.S. in the
mid-30's. He was acquainted with many of the great figures in science
and technology, including von Braun, who once invited him to go sailing
on a lake. While they were alone in the boat von Braun confided that he
had never before in his life had a conversation with a Jew. It doesn't
tell us much about von Braun himself, but I think it says a lot about
pre-Nazi German society.
Cheers,
David
