According to, I think, that leaked foundation grant application of Pynchon's,
Pynchon was saying as much as twenty or twenty-five years ago that he was
working on a novel about a Japanese insurance adjuster. I think it was in that
same grant where the Mason-Dixon subject came up, as well as Pynchon's strange
interest in writing librettos for popular science fiction.
