a. Pynchon's pointing out that rather than being a clearing of the table,
a levelling of the playing field, a simplification of the pre-war world,
the war is actually complicating everything even more: if things seem
clearer on the surface afterwards (the U.S.A. versus the U.S.S.R., winner
takes all), that's just 'cause all the real conflict's gone underground,
into cartels and laboratories.
b. Pynchon's pointing out that solutions often just snap back in your
face. The law of unintended consequences asserts its iron rule...
