I always suspected the same thing; Nigel Richardson and I were on the same
wavelength and have a theory regarding the resemblance to _Finnegan's Wake_
in the last line/first line connection. I've posted it before, but if
you want it again, let me know. Actually, if you read the first line to
the song on the last page, then read the first line of the novel, you'll
find the same cadence, rhyme, and thematic coherence to suggest that the
opener is the next verse. Kind of all fits under the "too late" rubric
as well as the "knotting together" theme (quoted incorrectly--picking up
late on an earlier post).
