i hate to repeat things that were mentioned in the list ages ago by 
somebody else but since nobody else mentioned it i might as well: 
allegedly there was the rumour in the sixties of bananas causing 
hallucinations (you take the peel dry it and then smoke it orsomething 
bizzare like that). (hence possibly the banana cover of the velvet 
underground at about teh same time as GR? -hey in the first page even 
the word velevet appears for some people that are going underground... 
nah maybe not...). 

on something completely different I was thinking last night about GR and
its relation to the Vietnam war. I would think that it is very strange for
such a book not to have any links to it in the first pages but then again
i am not sure that there are any there. I did manage to locate a very
obscure one (and probably completely false but then again who cares?) At
teh end of the first page when the phrase "ruinous secret cities of poor,
places whose names he has never heard..." appears (places in Vietnam being
bombed?). 

Can anybody remind me if there are any hints about the date of the first 
day in GR?
