Dave wonders:
"Previous readings have conditioned me to expect the wood/coal/tar
business, with the later links to Gravity, organic synthesis and so on,
but the iron's got me stumped."

A speculation--Iron is the favored material of the old industrial order:
the building matter for trains and tracks, the framework of buildings
toward the end of the 19th century, the stuff of cookware, etc.

Most or all of these functions will in time be superceded by plastic--
a-and we all know what *that* means!

Rust never sleeps, but plastic doesn't decay (much).
