Just picked up the paperback of John Barth's FURTHER FRIDAYS
and was browsing the index when I beheld several citations
for TRP. Most proved to represent only TRP's name in a list
of pomo heavyweights, but there was one interesting
anecdote. JB reveals that he read GR in 1973 and was impressed
enough with Slothrop's lost and found harmonica incident to use
it as a model nearly ten years later for a similar
lost and found hat incident in his novel, SABBATICAL. However,
"I admired GR as an astonishing performance, but the novel did not touch my heart."
[if above line cut off, should read "...but did not touch my
heart."] Sorry!
