Might this not be another version of the sense of preterition as the 
'irrevocable', the non-revocatur? An irreversible fall or collapse? 
Jumping ahead a bit to the description of the rocket's parabola, the 
rainbow:
"That shape of no surprise, no second chances, no return" (209)
Presumably, also of no appeal.
