>From my readings in the book _Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in
America_ Newark was once called New Ark of the Covenant. So, indeed, it is
still called New Ark, not only to distinguish it from Newark, NJ, but
based on an abbreviation of it's original name. Oh, and I live in
Philadelphia: anyone I've met from Newark, DE says New Ark.
