[Ted Samsel]

Ebenezer Cooke was a real historical personage. This was quite a
shock to me, but I was fossicking through one of the local county
libraries and found a slim volume on Cooke & his "poetry". I was
flabbergasted to say the least.

And the halfbreed renegade personna of Burlingame (whose name I
don't recall) was a real person (or persons), too. He shows up
more in Barth's LETTERS.

(and to be a bit selfserving, the first Samsels (Sompsell) showed
up in PA back in the 1680s. Perhaps Isaac & Devalt Sompsell make
an appearance in M&D.) Quien sabe.
