Being originally from the Pacific Northwest, I was amazed when I moved
east at how important ethnicity can be. Out here in Philly, everyone is
an Italian, or Irish or something else. I felt left out, not ever having
paid any attention to being anything other than an American (like everyone
else I grew up with -- Asian, African or otherwise, they were all just
Americans to me). I also got tired of ethinic excuses (like, "ignore him,
it's just his Irish temper").
A little digging established that my "Larson" is Norwegian. Explains my
red beard, I guess (despite the light brown hair). So I proudly call
myself a viking (though a vegetarian one at that). I make sure to remind
anyone with an Irish temper of the history of what vikings like to do with
the Irish...
