Questions of the legality, ethics, economics, artistry, etc. of Seigel's
and Larson's "book" are ironic, considering Seigel's initial contact with
Andrew, which supposedly involved copyright infringement of Seigel's
article. Andrew then supposedly (contritely?) invited Seigel to come in
from the cold and enjoin the list, to perhaps share with us his first hand
experiences with....
But I, for one, smelled him out right away and stopped posting as soon as
he surfaced (as did others). Shame, too, because it happened right at a
great part in the GRGR. It was clear from the outset that Seigel had/has
little of real value to offer the readers of Pynchon. As indebted to
Pynchon as he is, Seigel is an artistic parasite, seemingly incapable of
real independent creation. And yet, in a double ironic twist, it's his own
soul that Seigel is feeding on. Transcendence eludes him. The magic of
Pynchon's artistry remains a mystery.
In the end, it really has nothing to do with legality or ethics, but
everything to do with (hold your breath) artistic integrity. In the end,
it's really more a matter of pride than anything.
Personally, I'd rather beg for a living...but then again, didn't he try
that, also?
