Cheuse is a long time Pynchon hater. His review of Vineland on NPR, when
that book first came out tipped his hand. All Vineland controversies aside,
Cheuse took the opportunity to point out that at last (with Vineland) there
was clear proof that Pynchon was not a genius, was washed up, etc.,
etc...It was clear that not only GR, but also, Pynchon's whole refusal to
play the game in such a way that would legitimate the likes of Cheuse and
Cheuse's role as a "serious" arbiter of literary values, had been chafing
against Cheuse's sense of well being for years.

One person's slog is another's sail.
