Michael Dirda's not _that_ old, though he has won a Pulitzer or two.
He's also been to enough sf conventions to know the truth of from
whence he spake, conceeding the overlap in the final sentence.

Another rave review for M&D in the Washington Post Book World.
Gives more of an idea of the book than any other review so far
almost to the extent of spoiler-dom. Also there was kind of a
slam at certain younger folks (the reviewer must have been an old
guy):"Still, I doubt that Mason & Dixon will attract the computer
freaks, science fiction fans and Gen-Xers who look upon Gravity's
Rainbow as a kind of modern Scripture (as little read, I suspect,
as the ancient one). In truth, the novel will probably appeal most
to the people who first celebrated Pynchon, the 60s generation
that is now entering its own late middle age."
