Alumni"-- Joanna Russ (?)
Joanna Russ writes science fiction and novels. We attended William Howard
Taft High School in The Bronx together, where she preceded me as
editor-in-chief of the literary magazine, Portfolio. Being editor-in-chief
of this publication for a guy was not anywhere as good as being a water boy
for the basketball team, but it was in the running -- 5,000 students, mostly
intensely upwardly mobile intellectual Jews, with a smattering of other
equally upward and intellectual ethnic types. There were girls who
worshipped writers in those days the way they worshipped rock stars in the
late 60s. And they were girls, not women, too. Women were teachers and
mothers. Things do change.
