Thoughts (no spoilers) on M&D, ere I embark from fair Albion

I don't recall anyone pointing out an obvious parallel with GR:
both books begin at Advent.  This may be so self-evident that
no one deemed it worthy of mention, or I may have missed it amid
the noise, twice- and thrice-sent messages...

Also, the p-list wasn't around when Vineland was published, and this
is the only "literary" list I've ever joined.  Anyone have any thoughts
on the closest parallel to our M&D discussion in the history of the Net?
That is, when was the last time a literary work of similar (well, y'know,
*somewhat* similar) magnitude was published, whose author was the subject
of (1) a fairly active mailing list and/or newsgroup (whose membership
included people whose doctoral dissertations were about said author),
(2) several quality web sites?
