I've always thought that the opening of Vineland has a lot of
self-conception in it. That TRP saw himself as having to dress up like a
clown and toss himself through a window to earn another insanity check.

Now, here's Mason & Dixon, opening with an old Nunkle, who can keep himself
from being toss'd Out the Door by keeping the children amus'd with another
Herodotic Web of Adventures and Curiosities -- this time (purportedly)
chosen for their moral usefulness (thought the children would have them
tilt toward the bawdy.)

PS - can anyone provide etymology for "Herodotic"?
