"walking" or "waking"

I checked this morning upon receipt of the original query in my
girlfriend's copy of GR, published in 1995, and "waking" was the verb on
the page. I myself, upon revisiting the passage, would infer that the we
are to read it as "waking". Especially with tag "deliberately", as when
one wakes herself (or himself) from a dream, more aptly in its usual
context--and I would argue here--a nightmare. Of course, as pointed out by
Steve Maas, "walking" does work (they both could work), but myself, I
rather think that "waking" works even better, especially in light of the
implication it could therefore be "deliberate" word-play, were one to
suspect Pynchon of such a tactic....
