They're quickly getting much more useful for this. Amazon, for example,
now lists with some of their more popular books four other titles that
customers of that title have been buying. Soon you're following links in
a thread that you never would in a physical bookstore. So your browsing
is different.
Of course, you might argue that being able to flip through the books is
an important part of browsing, and in that case you'll have to wait until
there is more content online, but first chapters are already up for some
books on Amazon and other online stores.
