I forget the name of the book, but several years ago I read a book by
I.F.Stone, "The Hidden History of the Korean War" that examined in detail
the origins and history of the Korean War (or police action or whatever we
called it), based on a close reading of press coverage and government
documents. According to the amazon.com database, it was published in 1969
and is "hard to find.". I remember it as an amazing investigation that
opened my eyes to the way you could read between the lines of the media and
government pronouncements.
Tying it in with the M&D theme of history & truthtelling, it was also, as I
recall, a clear statement of the author's belief that he could do a better
job of figuring out what really happened by *not* talking to people who
took part in the events, but instead by studying what they said on paper on
the time and what was said about those events at the time. I'll admit to
reading this book at a time of my life when a lot of things get blurry, so
forgive any gross errors here, if you can.
Cordially,
Doug
