TV vs. Reading et al

Just to clarify my beliefs, oh, and I do appreciate the
kind comments and debate ongoing:
Yes, TV, movies, animal-watching et al has merit. Unfortunately,
everything but reading seems to have enough support and champions
that they do not need further help.
Reading and literacy does. When there are more homes with TVs
in this country than homes with running water, I think we have a
problem. Not to mention our illiteracy rate (which should be less
than 1% and don't say it isn't possible look at Iceland and Korea).
That's it, that's all. Not to mention, everything we've done in
this discussion has been WRITTEN, rather than broadcast. Reading
was involved, TV-like viewing was not.
