Whoops. A little rudimentary web searching reveals that Garrick was one
of a circle of luminaries associated with the ghost (to quote, "for
example William Hogarth, Horace Walpole, David Garrick, Samuel Foote,
Charles Churchill, John Wesley and by no means last a certain Dr Johnson."
Since Peg Woffington was 2 years dead maybe Mason sees (or imagines he
sees) an echo of himself and Rebekah. (Were Garrick and Woffington ever
romantically linked?)
