I've been waiting for the lightning of complete understanding to strike
but here it is about time to end MDMD (6) and nary a thundercloud in
sight. So I guess I'll burden you all with some poorly formed thoughts.

If there's three genders does that mean it takes all three to tango? If
three were the standard "couple" that would explain why what would be a
love triangle automatically becomes a Quadrilateral. But--what triangle
does Mason have in mind? If he and Rebekah's ghost are two of the three
who's the third? There doesn't seem to be a love interest in Mason's life
at this time--except maybe Dixon. Late in the book are certain passages:
The Rev'd tells us [697] "Only now, far too late, does Mason develop a
passion for his co-adjutor, comparable to that occurring between
Public-School Students in England." Rebekah says to Mopery of herself,
Mason, and Dixon [703] "If we are a Triangle, then must I figure as the
Unknown side. Dare you calculate me?" The Rev'd says of Mason and Dixon
[689] "...for some couples, however close, Love is simply not in the
cards."

One trouble with this interpretation is that this triangle doesn't include
one of each of the three genders.
