Yes, they are definitely in Winter's Tale, the play M&D reminded me of
often as I read, both in the ripe complexity of its language and its
temporal sweep, not to mention the telescoping of time (at times). It is
so focused on space that a reader can overlook the intriguing ways it
handles time, as beautiful in it own way as Love in the Time of Cholera.
Hey, I never thought I'd use "beautiful" to describe a Pynchon
book without throwing in a qualifier like "morbid" or "strange" or
"grotesque" or "twisted"--or at least "darkly". Is it any wonder that M&D
leaves a lot of us startled, not knowing what to say?
