JR? Is that JR Ewing? Junkie Rodents? The Jewel in the Ricebag? Wha?
Please, foax, burn a few calories by spelling things out once in a while.
Me, I'm reading Garvity's Rainbow and in those moments when I'm not quite
sharp enough for that I'm reading some of Patrick O'Brian's
historical/nautical novels. They are the very best of that genre, in
case any of you like it. A little while back I read a current thriller
called "Enigma," (sorry, the author's name escapes me) set amongst the
English boffins trying to crack and re-crack the German military code
during WWII. An interesting companion to Garvity's Rainbow, and good
thriller-writing.
I'm listening to a lot of blues: Guy Davis, Corey Harris, Paul Rishell
and Annie Raines, some old Annie Raitt, Charles Brown. And a little
flamenco: a really wonderful compilation of Melchor de Marchena in
Philips' "Grandes Guitarras de Flamenco" series; Melchor was the singers'
favorite guitarist, so the compilation includes a lot of stunning vocal
work by the likes of Pepe el Culata. And some jazz: Stan Getz's last
recordings, with Kenny Baron on piano, and Ella Fitzgerald's recently (I
think) reissued "Intimate Ella," and some Oscar Peterson. And then
there's the almost indescribable "Another Country" by the Chieftains,
recorded in Nashville with a lot of Nashville greats.
And Richard Goode's incomparable Beethoven sonatas, and when I'm cooking,
I just gotta have my opera, various budget compilations. "The Ultimate
Opera Queen" is a good one.
Cheers,
David
