Vineland and smoking dope..

Trying to get the list back on track somehow, although
I now will never be wondering to myself...."hmm....
what are some GOOD books...." (ehem!)

I wasn't going to post this idea I had during my re-reading of
Vineland but after I saw someone post something
about an essay entitled "Smoking Dope with Thomas Pynchon"
I just couldn't hold back. 

Of course like any re-read one tends to notice things that one
missed during the first time around. Anyway, on page
24 there is a parenthetical that I just gotta believe is Pynchon
talking to himself.

It takes place when he's describing Zoyd's days down in Gordita
beach at the "dope house.":

"Now and then he would get fooled on some minor dope purchase, sweet 
basil in a heat-sealed bag, a small vial of Bisquick (yep, he'd murmur,
still making stupid mistakes and how about yourself?)

Either this is a) very obvious or b) just an absurd idea...

Anyone have any opinions on this one?

And while this newbie is at it, what's the consensus on 
TP's drug usage. Verifiable?
