Not sure if this will surface in M&D, but having worked at one
time with historical archaeologists, I once ran into a fellow
who had found (by correlating the surveyors logs with the lines
surveyed during the "demarcation" of the frontier) that odd-ball
zigs and zags in (hopefully) straight survey lines were possibly
due to the availability of cheap (and bad) likker.
"Pass that jug over here, Zebulon. I need a dram or two to clear
my vision."
