How do we know caffiene plays an important part in Mason & Dixon?

I was told by what seemed at the time like a reliable source that
Mr. Peet was in fact the person who eventually sold his operation
and moved north to found Starbuck's (named after Ahab's coffee-drinking
mate). Is this impossible?
And don't even complain about the appropriateness of this discussion,
since as we all know caffiene consumption is an important part of
_Mason & Dixon_.
