Abbey published a piece in Outside several years ago about a rafting trip
down Alaska's Tatshenshini River. (I remember this only because I rafted the
same river.) He mentions his great admiration for Pynchon and GR to a
fellow traveler who, in turn, casts aspersions on Abbey's taste in
literature. Abbey reports a strong dislike for this gentleman from that
moment on.
More Pynchon references: Has anyone heard of a new novel "After" by an
author named Bukiet (can't remember the first name). The title refers to the
time immediatedly "after" WWII. Bukiet incorporates GR's Rocketmann and
Anubis into the book (with acknowledgements). I read a positive review of
the book in The Oregonian -- supposed to be a funny, trenchant account of
concentration camp survivors and their attempts to parlay the post-War
economy into personal riches.
