The most educational example of non-use of drugs (at least
early on in one;s career) not being a roadblock to trippy writing
is Philip K Dick.  All his most paranoid, hallucinigenic stuff
from the Sixties (Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, etc)
was written before he had ever sampled any drugs other than
amphetamines.
