Not *exactly* sad -- melancholy maybe -- but when in those moods I've
always liked to listen to Monk's "Crepuscule with Nellie" (the one on
"Criss Cross"), or Brian Eno's "An Ending (Ascent)" from "Apollo."

Passages: The death of Colonel Aureliano Buendia about 3/4 through _One
Hundred Years of Solitude_ (pp. 272-3 in my Harper & Row paperback). The
end of William Kotzwinkle's story "Elephant's Graveyard" (from _Elephant
Bangs Train_) or the "little sloth" passage at the end of his _Dr. Rat_.
Gosh, now I'm making myself sad.
