Not to say "never" is not to say "did". The case, still open, is
still inferential. What testimony we do have is not positive.
Besides...: long before the Aptos years, when Huxley's essays were
giving the nihil obstat to experimentation while stressing the
effectiveness of nonchemical tools, TRP seems already to have
developed a fondness for finessing experience through listening,
study, and thought. The tool may have felt sharp enough that, come
the '60s and the chance to go to Frisco, buy a wig, and sleep on
Owlsley's floor, TRP would have passed by the more extreme diversions.
Prudence there, not fear, the way a musician would walk the hills but
pass up a chance to do a little rockclimbing.
