     Steely sez:

LSD probably wasn't illegal when LeGuin would have consumed it.
Marijuana has been decriminalized in Oregon--possession of less than
an ounce is the equivalent of a parking ticket. Ballot initiative set
for next year will probably take it even farther than the recent ones
     in AZ and CA.

You know, back when I was a teen, studying my Florida "Rules of the Road"
in hopes of getting my learner's permit (um, 1979, it was) I remember
reading that possession of marijuana in the quantity that would typically
be found in 1 American-college-student-size joint was punishable only as a
minor misdemeanor.

Now, I take it, the offense would be punishable with something just shy of
decapitation.

A-and, speaking of which, did anyone hear any of the excerpts from our fine
representatives in Washington regarding the CA/AZ ruling allowing medicinal
of marijuana? You'd think the devil himself were walking among us - total
mass hysteria. They must have stayed up late the night before watching
"Reefer Madness" 'cause that's just what it sounded like.

Jean.
