_The Optimist's Daughter_ Eudora Welty is very powerful. I
would suggest _As I Lay Dying_ by Faulkner, but I read it as a kid
and can't speak to it's details anymore. _Sabbath's Theatre_ by Philip
Roth has a lot about this subject in it, but the theme may well be
overwhelmed by others, particularly that of acting in/and relations.
