A big difference between the quest objects in V./GR etc and Hitchcock's
conception of the McGuffin is that Hitchcock is using them as a plot
device - no significance attached to the content/meaning of the object
(it's taken at face value), but it certainly exists. In _V._ and _GR_,
the action constantly revolves around the speculation and exploration as
to what the meaning of the object is (and its actual existence is
uncertain).

Quite different things, it seems to me.
