If I can bring a personal note into this, my late civil-engineer father
was assigned by his company as a young man to demonstrate to
Hearst that the site purchased for the future Beach House
wasn't exactly where H. thought, but at a slightly
less desirable (in H's opinion) spot nearby.
Daddy arrived with his surveying equipment, went through the
necessary rigmarole, and eventually but with great difficulty
convinced the great man where destiny was to place his famous
love nest.
At least this is the way I heard it many years later. Unfortunately,
no discussion of the relationship with Davies was ever
mentioned.
Daddy fancied himself as sort of a latter-day Mason and Dixon.
