I read a review of this in this months "The Sciences". (Jan./Feb. this year.)

Creation of the Sacred:
Tracks of Biology in Early Religions
by Walter Burkert
Harvard University Press

The book addresses the question of the evolutionary good of the idea of God.
Gods are expensive. Burkert delves into the origins of religion and
speculates about its survival for so long.

As I said, I haven't read it, but I'll probably get it based on the review.
(Have no idea when I'll ever find time to read it.)
