And interestingly, I think this worked to the book's benefit, reducing
the word from a shocking (and therefore distracting), never-seen-in-print
obscenity to the innocuous, meaningless, ubiquitous sound that it is
among GIs everywhere (I know, I was one -- the often joked-about, and
sometimes realized, fear being that one would go home on leave and say,
"Pass the fucking peas," in the middle of Thanksgiving dinner).
