Actually, I just saw _ABBA: The Movie_ on VH-1 a couple o' weeks back. At
first, I was prepared to laugh at it, and crack all those cliche jokes about
a 70's disco act -- BUT man, was *I* surprised! The movie was actually a
bit postmodern -- lots of strange narrative tricks, was it concert footage
or make-believe questions running through my mind, and a total flip-flop of
my expectations ensued. I now have total respect for the group -- and the
knowledge that the founders went on to have a hit Broadway play provides
some satisfaction. Funny also, from the concert footage, it appeared that
their music actually bordered on progressive classically-influenced European
rock (amazing how little of their music seemed to sound like "Dancing Queen"
-- their only US hit). Interestingly also, I dedect some influence by the
act on early Queen material (see Night at the Opera, Queen II and A Day at
the Races) and even modern progressive acts like Marillion. Neat.
