Charm? Maybe. Necessity, yes. Welles had to get the actors to postdub
dialogue (many of the supporting roles were cast with non-English-speaking
Spaniards)--if you listen hard, you can hear Welles filling in some of the
bits himself (not untypical of him). Still, the use of music, the sounds
of the Battle of Shrewsbury, and the great readings by Gielgud, Keith Baxter,
and Welles himself are recompense enough.
I'm really reaching for a Pynchon connection here . . .
