chris a: naturally you can come to the conf as an undergrad, "non-academic", 
or whatever. You (as every list member) can also come for the pynchon-list
meeting only if you (they) feel like it. But of course you would *probably*
need to spend more money than in your ordinary Dizzy City weekend.

As to cools things in life: before I was swallowed by academia not so long
ago, I kept touring Finland and Europe with Mieskuoro Huutajat, Men's Choir 
the Shouters, for many years. Now keep getting messages from ex-Brothers; 
e.g. *two* visits to the Netherlands last fall: backstage chats with Bjork, 
performing at the farewell gig of the great Dutch band the Nits, etc., etc.
