May I also suggest that the title of the chapter "Counterforce" refers,
not to the anti-They forces, but to the way the book dissolves the
distinction between We and They at the end, as symbolized by Slothrop's
dissolution.  The "force" of the title could refer to the ultimately empty
organizational systems we use to define our lives.  And the novel?  What's
more, the destruction of the reader on the last page
suggests that we represent the "force" which is to be "countered," i.e.,
our inability to get beyond paranoia as an organizing force.
