Perhaps we remember the same things differently; or perhaps I heard the
opinions of too many lazy reviewers (& readers) who never went past the
surface.
No, I didn't read him that way, either. Always saw that smirk behind
everything -- and it's still there, although (as mentioned previously) it's
now being supplemented with genuine heart.
